Improve Home Resale Value with a Tiki Bar

In a difficult housing market, you are probably seeing the same thing I am.  Homes are staying on the market longer than ever and buyers seem scarce.  Short of dropping the price of your house (which some are forced to do), what can you do?
Small-budget improvements can give your house an interesting twist to help differentiate it from others in the neighborhood.  Of course, you have the classics like upgraded light fixtures and hardware, but why not think outside the box a bit more?

When building a new tiki bar at home, it is vital that you spend some time up front giving serious consideration to the type of home tiki bar experience that you are looking to create.  Will you be serving up enough beers to warrant a kegerator?  How far are you building your tiki bar from your existing refrigerator/freezer?
There is an excellent post over at the KegWorks Blog on things that should be considered when designing your home bar.  It asks some of the fundamental questions that you should be asking …

Whether you are planning a business trip to Seattle or heading to New York for a romantic weekend, there is probably a tiki bar or two worth visiting.  Rather than just blindly hitting the Yellow Pages, check out Critiki, a directory and review sites of Tiki Bars all over the world.  With over 650 locations listed (including 550+ in the United States), you can quickly find new tiki bars to see and offer your comments after visiting.  It even includes listings for great tiki bars that have long since disappeared.

If you found the tips and video on stocking your home bar helpful, you might like this article from the Portland Tribune.  It features several tips from Blair Reynolds at Trader Tiki.  It has several great ideas and is worth reading if you plan on hosting a party this holiday season.
My personal favorite from these tips – buying one bottle of booze per paycheck.  That would certainly ease the burden of having to buy eight bottles in a single trip when the bar runs dry.  Offering a laminated menu of …

With New Year’s Eve only weeks away, it’s time to pay attention to the bottles behind your tiki bar. Part of the fun of owning your own tiki bar is carefully selecting the liquor you’d like to use to stock it.  A broad basic range of liquor is key to any good home bar.
Because your guests can’t survive on rum alone, here is a good video on the key bottles that you’ll want to stock your bar with, along with descriptions of the winners.

Once you’ve got the basics covered, …

This is one of the more impressive indoor tiki bars you will see. Featured in the LA Times a couple of months ago, this basement tiki bar looks like it came straight out of the 1950s. The owners of this fine establishment have been collecting tiki decor for years, finally building out the bar in 2006.
Every detail has been covered in this design. As you design and build your own tiki bar, raise a Navy Grog to Alan and Michael. This is the standard by which …

For a great home tiki bar that probably doesn’t get the amount of use it deserves, check out John McCain’s tiki bar. If there is a silver lining in the Arizona Senator’s loss on Tuesday, he may at least get to spend a little time serving Mai Tais here (if it doesn’t sell first). A bar this beautiful shouldn’t go to waste.
If you do have the money to upgrade and don’t want to build your own tiki bar, this home (bar included) could be all yours for the …

Building a themed tiki bar certainly takes creativity.  This Indiana Jones tiki bar is no exception.  This tiki bar was modeled after the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland and incorporates some recognizable Indiana Jones tributes.

Even beyond the Indiana Jones style, this design is a well thought-out model and shows how you can build a tiki bar in your own backyard while taking up a bare minimum of space.  The design is a relatively simple one but as you can see, the results were fantastic.  Two of my favorite finishing touches …

If you would like to build a relatively simple tiki bar at home, these plans by Atomic Magazine could be just what you are looking for.  Built primarily out of bamboo, this tiki bar is perfect for entertaining and is small enough to fit in your apartment or poolside.
This step-by-step guide is entertaining and quite easy to follow.  If you can get your hands on the various sizes of bamboo required, your new tiki bar can be fully operational by this weekend – serving up Mai Tais and Zombies to …

In an effort to celebrate the most original tiki bars in the world, I would like to offer a closer look look at tiki bars with cool designs, unusual features, or just a great vibe.  This month’s candidate is a simple square design with several stools, wet bar, two refrigerators, and the obligatory flat-screen television.  You will notice that bamboo was not a factor in the design, but that the thatch roof provides the tiki feel for this tiki bar.  A couple of tiki torches out front round out the …
