What is a Tiki Bar?

Tiki bars are exotic, South Pacific-themed bars specializing in rum drinks such as the Zombie cocktail or mai tais.  The common themes in tiki bars are an upbeat atmosphere, relaxing music, and the presence of a “Tiki god” mask or carving.  The overall decor in a tiki bar often features a lot of bamboo and a thatch roof.  Ornamental decoration may include hula girls, palm trees, and tropical fabrics.  Many tiki bars, particularly those on a beach, are illuminated at night with tiki torches.  Tropical flowers, whether real or fake, help round out the theme.

The extravagant cocktails at tiki bars are generally served in ceramic tiki mugs, often with a tropical twist with an umbrella or plastic flower.  Hawaiian-style music (whether live or recorded) helps to set the relaxed mood in many tiki bars.  Furniture is often constructed from bamboo or is wood carved in a South Pacific style.

Tiki Bars have a rich history and were quite popular in the United States shortly after World War II.  They have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years and continue to be a popular style today.  Fans of tiki bars have not only led to the re-opening of tiki bars all over the country (and the world), but a large number of backyard and poolside tiki bars for private enjoyment.  This site is a celebration of the tiki bar, the cocktails it shares, and the good times it provides.
